
There are in total, eleven SHS in the three Tongu Districts of Volta Region, Ghana. These schools include Senior High Schools, Senior High Technical Schools and a Technical Institute.
There are three districts in Tongu. We have the Central Tongu District, the North Tongu District and the South Tongu District.
Adidome is the Capital of Central Tongu and Battor is the Capital of North Tongu whereas Sogakope is the Capital of South Tongu.
One of the Districts has five (5) secondary schools. Another has two (2) and the other has four (4) secondary schools. All sum up to eleven (11) Secondary Schools in the whole Tongu.
Below is a list of Secondary Schools in Tongu by District
Central Tongu District
- Adidome Senior High School. Also shortened as Adisec, Adidome Senior High School was founded by a group of old students of Adidome E. P Basic School led by Mr. E. K Titiati in October, 1995. The SHS started with fifty-seven (57) students and had seven (7) able teachers trained them.
- Mafi Kumase Senior High Technical School. Also know as Makstec, Mafi Kumase SHTS was founded in 1983. The school started with vibrant teachers and few students were enrolled and it has gradually gained attention.
North Tongu District
- Aveyime-Battor Senior High Technical School. Shortly known as ABAST, this Senior High Technical School was established in October, 1988. It first started as Battor State Agricultural School and it was later absorbed by government in 1991.
- Battor Senior High School. Located in the Capital of North Tongu, BASEC was founded in 1989. It started with few students and now has hundreds of students from all over Ghana.
- Dorfor Senior High School: DORSEC is a secondary education institution in Juapong. It is started as a private institution at Podoe, established in 1990 as Community Agriculture Senior Secondary School.
- Mepe St. Kizito SHTS. St. Kizito Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Mepe was established in 1980 as a Community Technical Institute to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of the Mepe Roman Catholic Church and Schools. The school began with 24 students and its first principal or headmaster, Mr. J.E.A. Adjaklo, was seconded from the Ghana Education Service. The institution was initially a private community venture until January 1993 when it became fully integrated into the Ghana Education Service, becoming the Mepe St. Kizito SHTS. It currently has over thousand student enrollments.
- Volo Community Day Senior High School. This school was established in 2016. The school came up as a product of infrastructural development by government with the idea of building schools with E-Block designs to help empower residents in local communities.
South Tongu District
- Comboni Technical/Vocational Institute. The Comboni Technical Vocational Institute, known locally as C.Y.O Technical/Vocational Institute, was established in Ghana on October 10, 1982, under the Catholic Diocese of Ho, as a private vocational training center. In 2012, it was integrated into the public school system.
- Dabala Senior High Technical School. DASTECH is a public technical institution in the Volta Region of Ghana, established in 1991 by the Ghana Education Trust (GETFund) to provide Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
- Sogakope Senior High School. Popularly known as Sogasco, Sogakope SHS is a second cycle institution established in 1961 as one of Ghana’s Trust Secondary Schools under the presidency of the late Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. The institution, nicknamed the “Lower Volta Varsity,” aims to provide academic and disciplinary excellence in the Sogakope community.
- St. Catherine Senior High School. Also known as Scasco, St. Catherine of Siena Girls’ Senior High School (SCASCO) was established in 2009 by Bishop Adanuti, located on the Accra-Aflao highway in Agbakorfe, near Sogakope.
Conclusively, all the SHS/SHTS listed above are mixed schools except St. Catherine, which is girls’ school. These second cycle institutions have professional tutors, trained purpose to handle the affairs of their students putting their wellbeing at first. The arrangement of the schools is not ranking.
