Torgbe Kordzo Hodze II, enstooled as Asafohi and successor of Torgbe Korbla Hodze I, who passed on to his ancestors decades ago, is a war chief. The Hodze Stool, which is one of the powerful seats of the Gbanvie Clan of Mepe, originates from victories in wars. This signifies that it is a war stool, and Torgbe Kordzo Hodze II is a warrior chief.
The first lord of the stool, Torgbe Hodze I, fought in numerous wars, one of which is the Adokpe War alongside different powerful warlords, where he captured Formeyikope, presently known as Hodzekope.
Diving back into history, Torgbe Korbla Hodze I was a great hunter and warrior who fought battles. He fought alongside powerful warriors like Torgbe Adzima, leading a war through the Vedome-Tsito enclave. It is believed that the originator of the Hodze Stool, Torgbe Korbla Hodze I, was part of the Ashanti wars, which led to his capture of part of Asante land. Additionally, Torgbe Hodze fought on the land of Ga and captured some part of their lands at Oyibi.
Traced to history, the Hodze Stool is a war seat linked to ancestral spirit backing. Because of this spiritual connection, the selection of who occupies it is not determined by humans but rather by spiritual forces.
The symbol of the Hodze Stool is Red Cowry. In Eʋe, Cowry is known as ‘Ho’ or Hokui; red in Eʋe means ‘dze’, so when you combine these two words, it’s called Hodze (Redcowry in English).
The chief has also focused on enhancing security in Mepe township. His donation of street lights aims to reduce crime and provide a safer environment. Overall, Torgbe Kordzo Hodze II is seen as a leader who prioritizes the well-being of his people.
